Just in: President Buhari inaugurates 30-member new wage committee

President Muhammadu Buhari, today, Monday, November 27, inaugurates a 30-member tripartite National Minimum Wage Committee for the negotiation of a new National Minimum Wage for the Nigerian workers.
The inauguration which was held inside the council chamber of the presidential villa Abuja was attended by governors and senior government officials.
The committee is made up of persons from the public sector, (Federal and state governments) and the private sector made up of the largest private employer group, the Nigeria Employers Consultative Association (NECA), Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce Industry Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA) and Nigerian Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (NASME).
Ama Pepple will chair the committee while the current minister of Labour and employment, Chris Ngige, will serve as deputy chairman.

Richard Egbule,the chairman, National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission will serve as the secretary of the committee.
Other members of the committee are minister, Budget and Planning, Udo Udoma, minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Winifred Oyo – Ita and the permanent secretary, general services office, office of the secretary to the government of the federation, Roy Ugo.
The Nigeria Governors’ Forum is also represented in the committee while the DG of NGF, Asishana Okauru, will serve as an observer.
President, Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Ayuba Wabba, will lead a team comprising of Peters Adeyemi, Kiri Mohammed, Amechi Asugwuni and Peter Ozo-Eson while the Trade Union Congress team will be led by its president, Bobboi Kaigama, and other members including Sunday Salako and Alade Lawa.
Igwe Achese, president, Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG is also a member.
Olusegun Oshinowo, director general, Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association, NECA, as well as Timothy Olawale and Chuma Nwankwo will be at the negotiation.
The director general, Federation of Construction Industry, FOCI, Olubunmi Adekoje, Chairman, Kaduna East Branch, Manufacturers’ Association, MAN, Ahmed Gobir and Francis Oluwagbenro also from MAN are members, Premium Times reports.
In his speech, President Buhari says present Nigeria minimum wage has expired, hence, the need for a new minimum wage.
Buhari said: "We are gathered here today to address issues concerning the welfare of the Nigerian people. Like his counterpart all over the world, the Nigerian worker is a vital element in the growth and development of modern nations. I therefore welcome the nominees of the Tripartite National Minimum Wage Committee who have been selected for the very important task of renegotiating the National Minimum Wage for our workers.
"We all know that the last Minimum Wage Instrument has expired, and it is in recognition of the need to ensure a fair and decent living wage that the Federal Government put in motion necessary mechanism so that we can today inaugurate this large committee with a big task ahead of you.
"You are all aware that during the period following the increase in Petrol Pump Price in May 2016, a Technical Committee was established to examine and make recommendations to Government on the measures to be adopted to cushion the envisaged painful effects of the increase on workers and the Nigerian populace at large.
"During the deliberations of the Technical Committee which comprised Government and Organized Labour, the need for the review of the National Minimum Wage was highlighted and recommendation to set up a committee to look into the level of minimum wage was made accordingly.
